Residential window tinting · 3M home window tint for heat, glare, privacy & security

The room over the garage doesn’t have to be ten degrees warmer.

Heat and fading come through the glass, and so does the fix: a nearly clear 3M film that cuts the heat load without darkening the room, installed in a morning by the same certified Epic crews that do our schools, with a firm number after a free in-home visit. No blinds, no dark tint, no new windows.

Why homeowners call

There are many reasons. Yours is the one that matters.

That one room is always hot

West- and south-facing glass turns rooms into greenhouses. 3M Prestige rejects up to 97% of infrared heat without darkening the window.

Glare on the TV and screens

Night Vision cuts glare up to 83% and stays clear at night — no mirror effect when the lights are on.

Energy bills

Lower cooling load on every sun-exposed window. 3M Prestige rejects up to 97% of infrared heat, which is where most of a west-facing room’s cooling load comes from.

Privacy without blinds

Fasara frost and gradients for bathrooms, sidelites, street-facing glass. Light in, eyes out.

Shopping for shades to fix a hot room?

Roller shades, cellular shades and curtains hide the window; they don’t stop the heat or the fading that comes through it. Film does — all day, with the view kept.

Security & storms

Ultra Night Vision and 3M S2400 keep broken glass in the frame — break-ins, storms, kids and baseballs.

House window tinting: what it does and how to plan the cost

House window tinting is a 3M film applied to the inside of the glass you already have. It cuts heat and glare without darkening the glass, blocks up to 99% of UV, and most homes are done in one visit. The price depends on square footage, the film and the glass itself, so plan with ranges, not a per-window guess.

Home window tint is not car tint. Dark car-style tint cuts the sun by darkening the glass. The 3M films Epic puts on homes, such as 3M Prestige and the lighter 3M Ceramic shades, reject heat with optics or nano-ceramics, so the room keeps its daylight and its view. Start with the rooms the sun actually hits: west and south glass, the bonus room, the patio door.

The window film cost guide shows the planning ranges and what moves the number. The free in-home assessment ends with a written estimate, window by window, from Epic employees, never subcontractors. Book a free in-home assessment →

Anti-glare window film

Anti-glare window film for TVs, screens and home offices

Anti-glare window film cuts the sun’s glare on a TV, a monitor or a home-office desk without closing the blinds. 3M Night Vision cuts glare up to 83% and stays clear at night, with no mirror effect when the lights are on.

Glare comes from the window that faces the screen and the window behind the person looking at it. Film those first. A shade still has a place for one hour of low sun straight into a screen; for the rest of the day, film handles the glare with the view kept. Straight answers

How do I keep someone from breaking my sliding glass door?

Make the glass hold. A 3M security film such as 3M S2400 or Ultra Night Vision, bonded to the glass and attached to the frame, keeps a broken pane in the opening so the first strikes do not create a way in. Then add a lock bar or a pin in the track so the door cannot be forced or lifted from outside.

The same goes for patio doors, French doors and the sidelites next to a front door. Glass within reach of a lock is the glass to film first. Security film makes the glass more difficult to break through; it is not bulletproof, and no film makes glass unbreakable. Epic installs it with the same certified crews that do our school work. Does window film block UV and stop fading?

It blocks the UV and slows the fading. 3M window film blocks up to 99% of UV. UV, visible light and heat all fade floors, rugs, art and furniture, so a heat-rejecting film such as 3M Prestige slows fading further.

Nothing stops fading completely. Film is the closest thing short of closing the room, and it works on every pane, all day, without hiding the view.

What window film is best for west-facing windows?

A film that cuts heat and glare without darkening the glass. West glass takes the hottest sun of the day, low and straight in through the late afternoon. 3M Prestige rejects up to 97% of infrared heat and stays virtually clear; 3M Night Vision adds glare control for a TV room or a home office.

We put samples on your west glass so you choose by looking, not from a chart. See how Epic chooses film by elevation on the solar control window film page.

Why is one room hotter than the rest of the house?

If the room gets direct sun, the glass is the usual cause. A room with big west- or south-facing windows, a bonus room over the garage or a sunroom takes in far more solar heat than the rest of the house, and the air conditioning cannot keep up.

Film on that room’s glass cuts heat and glare without darkening the glass, so you can start with the one room. If the room does not get direct sun, have the ductwork and insulation checked first. Book a free in-home assessment →

FAQ

Residential window film questions

Will window film make my house dark?
Not the films we recommend for most homes. 3M Prestige and Ceramic series are virtually clear — they reject heat with multi-layer optics or nano-ceramics, not dark dye. If you want some shading for glare, Night Vision comes in light-to-medium shades and we bring samples so you choose on your own glass.
Can film void my window warranty?
3M films are tested for compatibility with insulated glass, and Epic verifies glass type and warranty terms before recommending a film. 3M offers glass-breakage and seal-failure coverage with professionally installed film; ask your Solutions Advisor for the terms for your windows.
How long does it last?
3M residential films carry a limited lifetime warranty when professionally installed. Films are scratch-resistant and clean with ordinary glass cleaner.
What does it cost?
Planning ranges by film are in the window film cost guide. The exact price is quoted per window after a free in-home assessment, which takes about 30 minutes and ends with a written estimate, with no pressure and no “today only.”
Who installs it?
Epic employees — certified installation specialists, never subcontractors. The same crews that install security film in schools.
Is window film worth it for a home?
Yes, if the problem is the sun: a hot room, glare on the TV, or floors and furniture fading. 3M film cuts heat and glare without darkening the glass, blocks up to 99% of UV, and carries a limited lifetime 3M warranty when professionally installed. It is not worth it on north-facing glass that never sees direct sun, or when the real problem is drafts or ductwork. The free in-home assessment tells you which windows are worth filming and which are not. See what drives the price in the window film cost guide.
How do I stop my wood floors from fading?
Block the UV at the glass and cut the heat. Film on the windows and doors that throw sun across the floor protects the whole floor all day, not just the part a rug or a blind covers. 3M film blocks up to 99% of UV, and the heat-rejecting films slow fading further. Nothing stops fading completely; film is the closest thing.
What is the best window tint for a home?
For most homes, 3M Prestige or one of the lighter 3M Ceramic shades: they reject heat with optics or nano-ceramics instead of dark dye, so they cut heat and glare without darkening the glass. Choose 3M Night Vision when glare on a TV or a desk is the main problem, and a 3M security film such as Ultra Night Vision when the glass also needs to hold after it breaks. Dark, car-style tint is the wrong tool for a house: it darkens the room and the view without doing the job better. Epic brings samples to your own windows so you choose by looking.
Does window tint for a house block UV rays?
Yes. 3M residential window film blocks up to 99% of the sun’s UV rays, including the clear films. That slows the fading of floors, furniture and art, though no film stops fading completely, and The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends 3M window film.
Does window film keep a house cooler?
Yes, in the rooms the sun hits. 3M Prestige rejects up to 97% of infrared heat while staying virtually clear, so sunny rooms stop running hotter than the rest of the house. Epic matches the film to each room and the direction it faces.
Can I still see out of tinted windows at night?
Yes, with clear and low-reflective films. 3M Prestige stays virtually clear and 3M Night Vision is made for low reflectivity, so the view out after dark stays natural; highly reflective films can look like a mirror from inside at night.
Does security film help keep burglars out of a house?
It makes breaking in harder. Security film holds broken glass together and, attached to the frame, keeps the glass in the opening, making it more difficult for potential intruders to break in. It does not make glass unbreakable. See security window film.
