Frosted window film · frosted glass film for offices, glass doors and homes

Clear glass, made private. The daylight stays.

Frosted window film is a translucent film applied to the glass you already have. It makes clear glass look etched, blocks the view through it day and night, and lets most of the light pass. Epic installs every current 3M Fasara frost and cuts custom frost bands, logos and room names in-house, for conference rooms, glass doors, exam rooms, classrooms, storefronts and homes, with our own certified crews.

What is frosted window film?

Frosted window film is a thin, translucent film bonded to the inside of existing glass. It scatters light instead of blocking it, so the room stays bright while nobody can see through the pane. Frosted glass film, privacy frost and etched-glass film are all names for it.

The choice is how much of each pane to cover. A full frost goes edge to edge for restrooms, exam rooms and bathroom windows. A privacy band frosts eye level and leaves the glass clear above and below, the detail most conference rooms get. A gradient fades from frost to clear. For patterns, textures and color, see decorative window film.

Where frosted film goes

Offices, doors, exam rooms, classrooms, homes.

Offices & conference rooms

A frost band at eye level on the conference room wall, a full frost on an office sidelite, or the whole glass front of a huddle room. Screens and faces stay private; the floor keeps its daylight.

Glass doors

Frosted film for glass doors: full coverage on a restroom or HR door, a band on an office door, room names and numbers cut out of the frost so the door labels itself.

Healthcare

Exam-room doors and sidelites, consult rooms, lab and pharmacy glass. Privacy at seated and standing eye level, without blinds to clean and without a dark room.

Schools

Classroom door glass and front-office sidelites that need to be covered in a lockdown. Frost goes over security film already on the glass, and printed graphics can too.

Retail & storefronts

Back-of-house glass, fitting rooms, the lower half of a street-facing window. Frost hides the view and keeps the store bright.

Homes

Bathroom windows, front-door sidelites, a street-facing bedroom or a glass shower partition. A frost keeps the light and ends the need for a blind.

Frost and graphics are rendered in perspective onto the glass in each scene, in true inches (an 18–78 in. privacy band, 2 in. markers). This is a simulation — patterns, colors and your brand name are placeholders for design — Epic’s designers and VisuFlare, our in-house print studio, produce the finished artwork and proofs on your actual elevations.

Custom frost

Logos, room names and patterns cut into the frost

Bring your logo, your room names or your architect’s pattern. Custom frost is cut in Epic Precision — proprietary cutting process department, from your artwork, labeled for its pane and kitted in installation order.

The department was built for security film. A hand cut can leave a nick in the film edge, and a nick is where a film tears when it is ever asked to hold; the machine removes that human error. On a frost graphic the same precision gives a clean edge that reads as etched glass. When the design calls for color or print, it is printed in-house; see custom frost and glass graphics.

Frosted film vs frosted glass

Should you frost the glass or replace it?

If the glass is staying, frost it. Frosted film goes on the existing pane, usually in a day, with no glazier and no room out of service. Etched or sandblasted glass means new glass and a longer job, and it is permanent.

Film can also carry a logo, room names or a band at the exact height you need, and 3M describes Fasara as removable, so the design can change with the tenant. By 3M’s current warranty bulletin, Fasara carries 5 years on interior, non-perimeter glass and 3 years on perimeter glass, with shorter terms for the newest designs; see the warranty page. FAQ

Frosted window film questions

What is frosted window film?
A translucent film applied to the inside of existing glass that makes clear glass look sandblasted or acid-etched. It blocks the view through the glass and lets most of the daylight through. 3M Frost Matte, for example, transmits 89% of visible light by 3M’s published data.
Can frosted film go over security film?
Yes. A frost can go on the room side of glass that already carries security film, so one pane gets privacy and protection. Epic checks the condition of the existing film before the frost goes on. See graphics over security film.
Frosted film vs frosted glass: which is better?
Frosted or etched glass is permanent and means new glass, a glazier and the room out of service. Frosted film goes on the existing glass, is usually done in a day, can carry a logo or room names, and 3M describes Fasara as removable, so the design can change when the space does. Where the glass is being replaced anyway, etched glass is a fair choice; where the glass is staying, film is faster and less disruptive.
How high should a frosted privacy band be?
High enough to cover the eyes of the people you want to hide, and no higher. A conference room is set for seated eye level, a corridor or exam room for standing eye level. Epic measures the band on site so it lines up across every pane in the room.
How much light does frosted film let through?
It depends on the design. 3M’s frosts range from Frost Matte at 89% visible light transmission to Milky Crystal at 19% and Opaque White at 10%, by 3M’s published data. The table on this page lists every 3M frost Epic installs.
Can frosted film go on glass doors and exterior glass?
Yes on interior glass doors. For exterior glass, 4 of the 17 3M frosts on this page are rated for outside use. Epic checks the glass type and sun exposure before recommending a design.
Will the frost label our doors too?
It can. Room names and numbers can be left clear in the frost, so the door labels itself and there is no separate sign to mount. See custom frost on this page for logos and patterns.
What does frosted window film cost?
It is quoted per pane after a free assessment, because the design, how much of each pane is covered, any cut lettering or logos and the glass itself all move the price. See what window film costs for the drivers. Most office and conference room jobs are installed in a day.
Can you see through frosted window film at night?
No. Frosted film blocks the view day and night, unlike reflective film, because it scatters light instead of mirroring it.
Is frosted window film good for bathroom windows?
Yes. Bathroom windows, front-door sidelites and street-facing bedrooms are common home uses: the frost keeps the daylight and ends the need for a blind.
How long does frosted window film last?
3M puts the expected indoor service life of its Fasara frosts at five to twenty years, depending on the design. The 3M warranty is 5 years on interior glass and 3 years on perimeter glass, with shorter terms for the newest designs.
